A delegation of representatives from the NGO Development Center, L’Agence Française de Développement and the Palestinian Authority visit the ‘Improvement of Livelihoods in Beit Skarya’ project
On Monday 9th of July, a joint-delegation consisting of Ghassan Kasabreh (NDC Director), Jamileh Sahlieh (NDC Programs Manager), Frédéric Desagneaux (French General Consul to Palestine), Hervé Conan (AFD Director), Maher Ghoneim (Minister of Public Works and Housing) and Abdel-Fattah Hamaiel (Governor of Bethlehem) visited the ‘Improvement of Livelihoods in Beit Skarya’ project in the Bethlehem Governorate. Located in an isolated region of the West Bank, Beit Skarya is an acutely marginalized community. Part of the Palestinian NGO IV Project (PNGO IV) managed and implemented by NDC, this project aims to enhance the living conditions of local families and develop the capacities and skills of women to enable them to contribute to family income. Palestinian NGOs the Riwaq Center and the East Jerusalem YMCA are implementing the project and bringing their wealth of experience in community development to bear.
NDC and NGO umbrella networks hold consultation workshop with international donors
On Monday 11th of June, the NGO Development Center and the four Palestinian NGO umbrella networks (the Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO), the Union of Charitable Societies, the Palestinian National Institute for NGOs and the General Palestinian Union for NGOs in Gaza) hosted a consultation workshop with representatives of international donors and organizations. The aim of this forum for dialogue was to engage donors in the formulation of a new five year NGO Strategic Framework for 2013-2017.
The NGO Development Center signs ‘Special Grant Facility’ agreements with nine human rights NGOs as part of the Human Rights and Good Governance Secretariat
On Monday 21st of May, nine grant agreements were signed with NGOs working in the West Bank and Gaza Strip at the NGO Development Center’s (NDC’s) main office in Al Ram. Ghassan Kasabreh (NDC Director), Jamileh Sahlieh (Grants Program Manager), Shadi Qare’ (Finance and Admin Manager) and Sjoerd Wiemer Sjoerdsma (Netherlands Representative Office Policy Officer) joined representatives of the successful applicant NGOs to sign the grant agreements. Ghassan Kasabreh and Sjoerd Wiemer Sjoerdsma welcomed the NGOs and articulated the desire of the Human Rights and Good Governance (HR/GG) Secretariat to maintain a close, cooperative and warm relationship during the duration of the respective projects.
The NGO Development Center Holds Annual General Assembly Meeting
On Saturday 12th of May, the NGO Development Center’s General Assembly held its annual meeting at NDC’s main office in Al Ram and were joined by Gaza-based members via video link. NDC Chairman, Zahi Khouri, welcomed eight new members to the assembly – Dr. Varsen Aghabekian, Aziz Mahmoud Mustafa Al A’sa, Khaled Zakaria Jabr, Suhail Sharif Kishawi, Khalil Abu Shammala, Constantine Su’ad Dabbagh, Nora Shawish and Dr. Riyad Al Zanoun. NDC’s new General Assembly now totals thirty one members.
Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and World Bank joint mission completes mid-term Review of Palestinian NGO IV Project
From the 17th to the 29th of March a joint AFD and World Bank delegation carried out a detailed mid-term review of the Palestinian NGO IV Project managed by NDC (funded by AFD/World Bank). NDC is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established to provide a sustainable Palestinian mechanism for the provision of support to the NGOs sector. NDC is proud to manage the Palestinian NGO IV Project (PNGO IV). PNGO IV aims to continue the success of the previous three PNGO projects while improving the delivery of key social services to Palestinian communities suffering from deteriorating socio-economic conditions. The project also contributes towards the institutional development of the NGO sector. By focusing on issues such as good governance, accountability and transparency, the project supports the sector in responding to the needs of Palestinians – especially the poor and vulnerable. Building the capacity of Palestinian NGOs will provide the basis for the long-term and sustainable provision of these services, whilst contributing to equal access to social services for the poor and marginalized.
NDC Signs GIAs with Seven NGOs Working in the Field of Human Rights and Good Governance (HR/GG)
On Thursday February 23rd 2012, the Human Rights and Good Governance Secretariat signed Grant Implementation Agreements (GIAs) with seven NGOs working in the field of human rights and good governance in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt). Totaling US$1,215,000, these Core Funding grants will contribute greatly to the protection and promotion of human rights throughout Palestine. In July 2008, several European donors – namely Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands – entrusted the NGO Development Center (NDC) with the establishment and management of the Human Rights and Good Governance (HR/GG) Secretariat. The HR/GG Secretariat provides a mechanism to more effectively manage the donors’ long-standing commitment to human rights and good governance. What’s more, financial and technical assistance can now be more effectively channeled through a permanent secretariat structure dedicated to supporting the HR/GG sector.
The NGO Development Centre hosts high-level Agence Française de Développement delegation for visit to development projects in the Jordan Valley
On Monday 20th of December a joint delegation from the NGO Development Center (NDC) and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) visited two ecological development projects in the Jordan Valley. NDC’s Director Ghassan Kasabreh and Project Officer Saed Quzmar were joined by AFD’s Palestine Director Herve Conan, Jacky Amprou (Head of Mission), Hani Tahan (Head of Project), Marie-Pierre Nicollet (Director of Mediterranean and Middle-East Department) and Marike Gleichmann (Country Desk Officer for the Palestinian Territories and Jordan). The two projects visited by AFD and NDC are funded under the PNGO IV Project. PNGO IV is a ground breaking funding and capacity building initiative managed and implemented by NDC and funded by AFD and the World Bank. Focusing on service provision, PNGO IV offers support to the Palestinian NGO sector through the dissemination of grants, targeted organizational capacity building and mentoring schemes. Partnering with organizations in the Jericho Governorate, NDC has direct access to some of the most vulnerable Palestinian communities. The brutal reality of Israeli land appropriation further emphasizes the importance of innovative agricultural projects in the Jordan Valley.
NDC and AFD sign memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of State at ceremony for innovative pilot project
On Thursday 22nd of December, the NGO Development Center (NDC) and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) – Palestinian NGO IV Project (PNGO IV) donor – signed a memorandum of understanding with the Palestinian Authority Ministry of State at the Ministry of State Building in Ramallah. The signing was attended by two project partner NGOs – Riwaq Center for Architectural Conservation and the East Jerusalem YMCA. This event signifies the beginning of a pilot project aimed at tackling the severe vulnerability of Palestinians living in marginalised areas and in particular the lack of opportunities available to the female population.
Human Rights and Good Governance Secretariat celebrates International Human Rights Day
In celebration of International Human Rights Day, the Human Rights and Good Governance Secretariat held a forum for dialogue discussing “Human Rights in the oPt: Protection and Promotion” on the 8th of December. Leaders Hall in Ramallah and the Grand Palace Hotel in Gaza simultaneously hosted the event which was attended by over one hundred Secretariat partners, international donors, PA representatives and members of the media. The Human Rights and Good Governance Secretariat is managed by the NGO Development Center (NDC) on behalf of four European donors: Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and the Netherlands. Established in 2008, the Secretariat is now in its second successful phase providing a mechanism to more effectively manage the donors’ long-standing commitment to human rights and good governance. Via the channelling of funds, engagement in sector development and promotion of policy dialogue, the Secretariat has established a fertile environment for the partner NGOs to flourish and grow.
NDC signs small grant facility agreements with six human rights NGOs
On Tuesday 18th of October the following six human rights and good governance NGOs signed grant implementation agreements at the HumaRights and Good Governance Secretariat – hosted by the NGO Development Centre (NDC): Jerusalem Community Advocacy Network (JCAN), Women’s Centre of Shu’ufat Refugee Camp (WSC), Palestinian Youth Association for Leadership and Rights Activation (PYALARA), Young Women Christian’s Association (YWCA), AFKAR for Educational and Cultural Development and the Community Media Centre (CMC). The ceremony took place at NDCs Al-Ram headquarters in the presence of Ghassan Kasabreh (NDC Director), Jamileh Sahlieh (Grants Program Manager), Shadi Qare’ (Finance and Admin Manager) and representatives of the six NGOs concerned.
